On Stacking Probabilistic Temporal Models with Bidirectional Information Flow

چکیده
We discuss hierarchical combinations of probabilistic models where the upper layer is crafted for predicting time-series data. The combination of models makes the naı̈ve Bayes assumption, stating that the latent variables of the models are independent given the time-indexed label variables. In this setting an additional independence assumption between time steps and mildly inconsistent results are often accepted to make inference computationally feasible. We discuss how the application of approximate inference to the practically intractable joint model instead, shifts the need for these simplifications from model design time to inference time, and the application of loopy belief propagation to the joint model realizes bidirectional communication between models during inference. A first empirical evaluation of the proposed architecture on an activity recognition task demonstrates the benefits of the layered architecture and examines the effects of bidirectional information flow.

This contribution deals with preliminary investigations on the behavior of the cortical algorithm in probabilistic hierarchic analysis synthesis systems. Such a subsystem is one the key components of Cognitive Dynamic Systems or Cognitive User Interfaces respectively. Both systems are typically characterized by the cybernetic circle that describes the perception of the environment along the sen...
متن کاملApplying the social insect metaphor to traffic models
We investigate the organization of traffic flow on preexisting uniand bidirectional ant trails. Our investigations comprise a theoretical as well as an empirical part. We propose minimal models of uniand bidirectional traffic flow implemented as cellular automata. Using these models, the spatio-temporal organization of ants on the trail is studied. Based on this, some unusual flow characteristi...
متن کاملEffects of Multi-directionality on Pedestrian Flow Characteristics
In design and analysis, standard references assume the pedestrian flow as unidirectional. In reality however, pedestrian flow is usually bi-directional. The main question pursued in this paper is that whether the main characteristics of pedestrian flow the same under uni- and bi-directional conditions. In order to achieve this goal, effect of bi-directional stream is inv...
متن کاملModeling phrasing and prominence using deep recurrent learning
Models for the prediction of prosodic events, such as pitch accents and phrasal boundaries, often rely on machine learning models that combine a set of input features aggregated over a finite, and usually short, number of observations to model context. Dynamic models go a step further by explicitly incorporating a model of state sequence, but even then, many practical implementations are limite...
